SmarterBird

The mailbox is the one place an AI assistant cannot see, and it is where most of the context lives: who asked for what, which invoice is due, which meeting moved. SmarterBird closes that blind spot for people who keep their mail in Betterbird or Thunderbird, without handing the mailbox to a cloud service.

What SmarterBird does

It is a single SmarterBird.exe: no installer, no admin rights. Press Install and it wires everything together, then shows each part turning green so you can see that it worked:

• copies the bridge add-on into the mail client profile,
• hands over the shared secret the add-on and the server use to trust each other,
• registers the MCP server with Claude Desktop and Claude Code,
• builds a local full-text search index of the mailbox,
• restarts the mail client safely and confirms the connection.

After that you ask Claude in plain language: "Any important mail today?", "Find the contract thread with the supplier and summarize where we left off", "Tag everything from the accountant this month". Claude answers from your real mail.

The safety promise: it drafts, you send

An assistant with a mailbox is only useful if it is safe to leave switched on. SmarterBird draws the line in code, not in a prompt, which is the same principle we describe in our article on AI guardrails.

The send and delete operations do not exist in the tool set, so no instruction hidden in an incoming email can trigger them. That matters because mail is an untrusted input channel by definition.

How it works

Claude talks to SmarterBird over MCP (stdio). SmarterBird talks to a small MailExtension inside Betterbird or Thunderbird over a localhost WebSocket protected by a shared token. Search runs against a local index that mirrors the mail client's own, so it is fast across all accounts and works even when the mail client is closed. Everything lives on your machine, under your user profile; remote access is off by default.

The same window doubles as a status page and a small dashboard: incoming and outgoing mail per day, per account, top senders and the hours mail arrives, filterable per account.

SmarterBird is commercial software published by Virtualcom Bt., the company behind Hilluter. It is the productized version of the kind of AI integration work we do for clients: a narrow tool interface, explicit limits, and a visible status for every moving part.
